PROJECT HOPE

Project HOPE is a program that offers interpersonal skills classes during the school year. The target population is at risk youth that are attending West Mart Alternative School in Oak City.

The 14 week series will be offered two times per school year and will be accomplished by video projects. Guest speakers will also be presenting information on various topics. These sessions will be offered during the school day to remove the barrier of transportation.

The topics to be addressed are:

  • Communication skills

  • Responsibility

  • Fairness and Justice

  • Integrity and Honestly

  • Dillgence

  • Dependability

  • Perseverance, Caring and Compassion

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Anger Management

  • Dealing with Peer Pressure

  • Sportmanship

  • Healthy Living (nutrition, physical activity and personal hygiene)

  • Basic Money Management

  • Job Readiness Skills

  • Risky Behaviors (drugs, alcohol, smoking, STDs and unprotected sex)

Incentives will be offered to students during each class session in hopes of gaining participation in the activity. There will also be a Recognition Service following the last session in which students will receive acknowledgment for successes. Staff will also make one-on-one visits with the youth to provide extra support and guidance.
